August 03, 2021 Many visitors to our Lafayette Park Hotel will want to take advantage of its easy access to San Francisco, and it’s no wonder: you don’t even have to drive; just hop on the BART for a great day trip. With so many sites in SF, it’s hard to pick just one, but for history or movie buffs, we recommend Fort Point. Once the site of a Spanish fortress, the current fort was completed by Union forces as a bulwark against Confederate troops in 1861. You’ll get a rare insight into the day-to-day lives of Civil War soldiers as you explore barracks, officers’ quarters, mess hall, armory, and cannons. In addition, Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Vertigo, often cited as the greatest movie of all time, used Fort Point as the site of one of its most memorable scenes: seemingly possessed by the ghost of her ancestor, Kim Novak pretends to leap to her death in San Francisco Bay, only to be saved by a very startled Jimmy Stewart.
