May 06, 2019 One of the most popular summer theater series in the nation, California Shakespeare Theater (affectionately known as Cal Shakes) has lit up the Siesta Valley with dazzling and culturally-innovative productions of classic and contemporary drama for the past 46 years. This summer’s lineup includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare’s fantastical tale of love in an enchanted forest (May 22 – June 16); The Good Person of Szechwan, Bertolt Brecht’s fable of a woman who leads a double life as a man and attempts to be good in a city that makes goodness a difficult feat (July 3 – 21); House of Joy, Madhuri Shekar’s action-adventure drama about a 17th-century Indian imperial bodyguard who undergoes a life-changing transformation (Aug 14 – Sept 1); and Macbeth, that timeless “Scottish play” about the folly of man’s hubris (Sept 18 – Oct 13). All shows take place amid gorgeous bucolic surroundings at the Lt. G.H. Bruns III Memorial Amphitheater, an open-air venue located just 15 minutes from the Lafayette Park Hotel.
